Montenegro Itinerary: 3, 5 and 7-Day Road Trip Plans

Montenegro packs a great deal into a compact country: roughly 290 km of Adriatic coast, five national parks and a mountainous interior, all within a few hours' drive of each other. That means your Montenegro itinerary does not have to choose between the sea and the mountains. Most first-time visitors base themselves on the coast and take day trips inland, which keeps packing and check-ins simple while still reaching the interior. The plans below build outward from the coast, adding a national park and more of the interior as you add days, and each one folds in Lake Skadar, the calm wetland that most fast-moving trips overlook.

Montenegro in 3 days

Three days is enough for the Bay of Kotor and a first taste of the interior. Base yourself in Kotor or Budva, keep the driving short, and save one afternoon for the lake.

• Day 1, Kotor and the bay. Walk the old town inside its Venetian walls, and if you have the legs, climb the fortress stairs above the fjord-like bay. The Bay of Kotor has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Detour to Perast and the island churches offshore.
• Day 2, Budva and the coast.Explore Budva's walled old town and its beaches, then drive south to photograph the Sveti Stefan islet, the most recognisable view on the Montenegrin coast.

Montenegro in 5 days

Five days lets you slow down and add the mountains that rise directly behind the coast, without the long transfer to the far north.

• Days 1 and 2, Bay of Kotor. Kotor, Perast and the slow drive around the bay, with time to swim and eat well rather than rush.
• Day 3, Budva and Sveti Stefan. The old town in the morning, a beach afternoon, and the coastal viewpoints at golden hour.
• Day 4, Lovćen and Cetinje. Drive the serpentine road up into Lovćen National Park for the Njegoš Mausoleum and its sweeping views, then down to Cetinje. This route continues naturally toward Lake Skadar.

Montenegro in 7 days

A week lets you reach the high north, the most dramatic part of the country, without feeling rushed.

• Days 1 to 3, the coast. Kotor, Perast, Budva and Sveti Stefan, as in the shorter plans, but at a gentler pace.
• Day 4, Lake Skadar. A full day on the water via Cetinje, with the Pavlova Strana viewpoint on the way in.
• Day 5, Ostrog Monastery.Break the drive north at Ostrog, the 17th-century monastery built into a vertical cliff face, one of the country's most striking sights.
• Days 6 and 7, Durmitor and the Tara Canyon. Finish in Durmitor National Park, with its peaks, glacial lakes and the Tara Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Base near Žabljak for hiking or rafting before you loop back.

Where Lake Skadar fits

Lake Skadar is the easiest national park to slot into any Montenegro itinerary. It is about 50 minutes from Kotor and even closer to Podgorica, so it works as a half-day or a relaxed full day from the coast. It is the largest lake in the Balkans, a national park since 1983 and a protected wetland of international importance, home to more than 280 bird species including the Dalmatian pelican. After the crowds of the Adriatic, the lake feels like a different country.

The most rewarding way to see it is by boat from the quiet village of Rijeka Crnojevića, where a private tour runs through around 15 km of river canyon before the water opens into the lake. Getting around

A rental car is strongly recommended for any Montenegro road trip. Distances are short, but the roads are winding and mountainous, and a car lets you reach Lake Skadar, Lovćen and the north on your own schedule. Public buses connect the main coastal towns reliably, yet they are slow and inconvenient for day trips into the national parks.

• Base towns. Kotor or Budva make the best bases for the first nights, both central for the bay, the beaches and inland day trips.
• Driving. Roads are paved and scenic but slow, so plan by driving time rather than distance. The currency is the euro, and fuel and parking are straightforward on the coast.
• Season. April to October is the window for settled weather and for boat tours on Lake Skadar. July and August are hottest and busiest.
