Montenegro National Parks: Skadar vs Durmitor vs Biogradska and More
Montenegro has five national parks: Skadar Lake, Durmitor, Biogradska Gora, Lovćen and Prokletije. Together they protect about 7.7 percent of the country, from the largest lake in Southern Europe to glacial peaks on the Albanian border. Three were established in 1952, Skadar Lake in 1983, and Prokletije in 2009. This guide compares them by landscape, location and what each is best for, so you can choose which to visit.

Skadar Lake National Park
Skadar is the wetland park, built around the largest lake in Southern Europe. It is low, warm and wide, a maze of reed channels, water-lily fields and island monasteries. It protects more than 280 bird species, including one of Europe's most important Dalmatian pelican colonies.
This is the park you visit by boat, not on foot. It sits close to Podgorica and the coast, which makes it an easy half-day. If your trip is about wildlife, calm water and a warm swim rather than alpine hiking, this is the one to choose. The full picture is in the Skadar Lake National Park guide.
Durmitor National Park
Durmitor, in the north, is Montenegro's high-mountain park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It centres on the town of Žabljak, the dark waters of the Black Lake, and the Tara River Canyon. The Tara is one of the deepest canyons in the world. It is the home of mountain hiking, white-water rafting and winter skiing.
Durmitor is a long drive from the coast and the lake, set at altitude with cool summers and snowy winters. Choose it for peaks, canyons and active days outdoors.
Biogradska Gora National Park
Biogradska Gora, also in the north, protects one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe, around the glacial Biograd Lake. The forest holds trees several centuries old. A flat trail circles the lake, making it one of the easiest parks to enjoy without a long hike.
It pairs well with Durmitor for a northern mountains trip. Choose it for old-growth forest and a gentle lakeside walk.
Lovćen National Park
Lovćen is the coastal mountain that rises behind Kotor and Cetinje. At its summit stands the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, Montenegro's poet-ruler. A long stair leads up, with sweeping views over the bay and the interior. The park is compact and close to the coast.
It sits on the mountain road between Kotor and Lake Skadar, so it slots easily into a day that links the two. Choose it for the views and the Njegoš Mausoleum.
Prokletije National Park
Prokletije, declared in 2009, is the newest and most remote park, covering Montenegro's share of the Accursed Mountains on the Albanian border. It is raw alpine wilderness, with sharp peaks, glacial lakes and long trekking routes, including stages of the Peaks of the Balkans trail.
It is far from the main tourist routes and best suited to experienced hikers. Choose it for serious mountain trekking away from the crowds.
Which Park Should You Visit
It depends on what you came for.
- For wildlife, lakes and an easy half-day: Skadar Lake, especially if you are based on the coast, in Cetinje or in Podgorica.
- For dramatic mountains, canyons and rafting: Durmitor.
- For ancient forest and a gentle lake walk: Biogradska Gora.
- For views and history near the coast: Lovćen.
- For remote, demanding trekking: Prokletije.
Many visitors pair Skadar Lake with Lovćen, since both sit on the route between Kotor and the interior. If your trip is coastal and short on time, Skadar is the most accessible park and the only one centred on water. To plan a day on the water, start with the complete Lake Skadar guide.
Plan your day on the water
Skadar Lake is the one Montenegrin park you explore from the water, among reed channels, lily fields and pelican colonies. A private River and Lake Tour from Rijeka Crnojevića with Captain Dusko is the way to see it, and the river canyon comes before the open lake. See every route on the tours page, or message Captain Dusko on WhatsApp to plan your visit.
