Karuč Village: The 1808 Fishing Village Reached Only by Boat

Karuč is a tiny fishing village on the northwestern shore of Lake Skadar, founded in 1808 and reachable only by boat. Its stone houses and cobbled paths sit at the water's edge, almost empty now. A handful of families and the fishermen who work the lake keep it alive. The draw is Karučko oko, a freshwater spring that glows electric blue beneath the surface. This guide covers the village's history, the spring, and how to visit.

A Village Built on Fishing

Karuč grew up in 1808 as a fishing settlement, in the era when the lake fed the villages around it. Families here lived by the water, catching carp, bleak and eel, and trading along the same channels the boats still follow today. The stone houses were built close to the shore, with the lake as the road.

Over the last century, as roads and towns drew people away, Karuč emptied. Most houses now stand quiet, and only a few residents remain. That is part of why it feels suspended in time. There is no road in, no car noise, only the lake and the old walls.

Karučko Oko: The Blue Eye

The village's centrepiece is Karučko oko, which means the eye of Karuč. It is a freshwater karst spring that wells up through the lakebed, and the water above it glows a deep, electric blue. The colour comes from the depth and the clarity of the spring water rising from below.

These springs, called oka across the lake, are where cold groundwater surfaces after travelling through the limestone mountains. Karuč has one of the most striking. Boats stop above it so you can look straight down into the blue.

What to See and Do

A visit to Karuč is about slowing down.

  • Walk the cobbled pathsbetween the old stone houses at the water's edge.
  • Look into Karučko oko, the blue-eye spring beside the village.
  • Meet the lake's heritage, in a settlement that has barely changed since the 19th century.
  • Watch for birds in the quiet channels around the village, away from the busier water.
  • Stop for coffee with one of the remaining families on the longer village tour.

The village pairs naturally with a meal of fresh lake fish. For where to eat carp and other local dishes around the lake, see where to eat at Lake Skadar.

How to Visit Karuč

There is no road to Karuč. The only way in is by boat, which is why it stays so quiet. Tours reach the village from Rijeka Crnojevića, following the river canyon and the open lake to the northwestern shore.

Two tours go to Karuč. The 70-minute Karuč Tour takes you to the village and the blue-eye spring. The two-hour Karuč Village Tour adds more time ashore, with coffee, the hidden lookout points and a slower pace. Both are private, with Captain Dusko, who knows the families and the history.

For the wider context of the lake and its other sites, see the complete Lake Skadar guide.

Plan your day on the water

Karuč is one of the few places on the lake you cannot reach by car, which is exactly what keeps it special. The Karuč Tour brings you to the village and the spring in 70 minutes. The longer Karuč Village Tour gives you time to wander and meet the locals. Both leave from Rijeka Crnojevića with Captain Dusko. Compare all routes on the tours page, or message Captain Dusko on WhatsApp to plan your visit.
