Driving from Podgorica

Driving is the fastest and most flexible way to the lake. For Rijeka Crnojevića, head toward Cetinje and turn off for the village, about 25 minutes in all. For Virpazar, take the main road south toward Bar through the Sozina area, about 35 minutes.

Roads are paved and easy. Car hire in Podgorica or at the airport typically runs from around €25 to €35 a day. Both lake towns have parking. Podgorica airport sits just south of the city, which shaves a few minutes off the drive if you are arriving by air.

By Train

The train is the cheapest and one of the most scenic options. Services on the Bar to Belgrade line stop at Virpazar, running every two to three hours and taking about 30 minutes from Podgorica. Tickets cost around €2. The station is a short walk from the village waterfront.

The train reaches Virpazar only. To start a tour from Rijeka Crnojevića, you would need an onward transfer.

By Bus

Buses run from Podgorica to Virpazar about ten times a day. The trip takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs roughly €4 to €5. Buses and trains leave from stations next to each other in Podgorica, so you can pick whichever leaves first. In July and August, arrive early or buy ahead to be sure of a seat.

Which Lake Town to Choose

Podgorica sits closest to Rijeka Crnojevića, the quieter northwestern village. Tours from here travel about 15 kilometres of river canyon, past stone bridges and water-lily fields, before the open lake begins. Virpazar is the busier hub with the train and bus links, but its tours head straight onto the open water and skip the canyon.

If you are driving, Rijeka Crnojevića is both closer and more scenic. If you rely on the train or bus, Virpazar is the easy arrival point. The full comparison is in Rijeka Crnojevića vs Virpazar, and other city routes are in the how to get to Lake Skadar guide. All Blue Horizon tours depart from Rijeka Crnojevića.

Planning a Day Trip from Podgorica

Because the lake is so close, a half-day works easily. Drive or take the train out in the morning, take a boat tour, and you are back in the city for lunch or early afternoon. With a car you can add the Pavlova Strana viewpoint above Rijeka Crnojevića, which needs no boat. Dawn tours give the calmest water and the best wildlife, and the short distance from Podgorica makes an early start painless.
