How to Get to Lake Skadar from Kotor, Budva, Cetinje and Podgorica
Lake Skadar sits about 40 km south of Podgorica and roughly 50 minutes inland from the coast. The fastest way in is by car: 25 minutes from Podgorica, 20 from Cetinje, and about 50 from Kotor or Budva. Public buses and trains run to Virpazar, but not to Rijeka Crnojevica, where the river-canyon tours start. This guide gives you the times, the costs, and the one decision that matters most: which lake town to head for.

Rijeka Crnojevica
Lake Skadar is well connected to Montenegro's main cities, but the route you take depends on which lake town you head for. This guide covers driving times, bus and train options, costs, and the single decision that shapes your whole visit.
Quick Reference: Driving Times to Rijeka Crnojevica
| From | Driving time | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Podgorica | ~25 min | ~35 km |
| Cetinje | ~20 min | ~18 km |
| Budva | ~50 min | ~50 km |
| Kotor | ~50 min | ~55 km |
| Tivat | ~55 min | ~60 km |
Times are approximate and assume normal traffic. Mountain roads from the coast are scenic but slow, so allow extra time in summer.
The First Decision: Rijeka Crnojevica or Virpazar
Lake Skadar has two tourism gateways, and they lead to different experiences.
Rijeka Crnojevica is a quiet village in the northwest, set on the Crnojevica River. Tours from here travel about 15 kilometres of river canyon, past stone bridges and water-lily fields, before reaching the open lake. That canyon section is the part Virpazar-based tours do not cover.
Virpazar is the larger, busier hub in the southwest, with the train station and most bus connections. Tours from Virpazar head straight onto the open water and skip the river.
If you are choosing where to spend your half-day, the full breakdown is in Rijeka Crnojevica vs Virpazar. All Blue Horizon tours depart from Rijeka Crnojevica.
Getting There by Car
Driving is the most flexible option, and the only practical way to reach Rijeka Crnojevica directly.
From Podgorica, follow the road toward Cetinje and turn off for Rijeka Crnojevica. The drive takes about 25 minutes. From the coast, you climb the Kotor or Budva mountain road to Cetinje first, then drop down to the river. Roads are paved and in good condition, though the coastal serpentines are narrow.
There is free and paid parking in both Rijeka Crnojevica and Virpazar. Car hire in Podgorica or at the airport typically runs from around €25 to €35 a day.
Getting There by Bus
Buses connect Podgorica to Virpazar about ten times a day. The journey takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs roughly €4 to €5. Buses from the coast usually route through Podgorica or Cetinje.
Note the limitation: buses serve Virpazar, not Rijeka Crnojevica. If you want a river-canyon tour and are travelling by bus, you would reach Virpazar and then arrange an onward transfer. For most bus travellers, the simpler plan is to base yourself in Podgorica and arrange a transfer or hire a car for the lake day.
Getting There by Train
The Bar to Belgrade railway stops at Virpazar. Trains from Podgorica run every two to three hours, take about 30 minutes, and cost around €2. It is the cheapest and one of the most scenic ways to reach the lake. As with the bus, the train reaches Virpazar only.
City-by-City Guides
Each main approach has its own detailed guide with step-by-step directions and tips:
- Kotor to Lake Skadar: day-trip routes, drive times and the mountain road via Cetinje.
- Podgorica to Lake Skadar: the fastest approach, by car, bus or train.
- Budva to Lake Skadar: the coastal day trip, including transport costs.
Cetinje, the old royal capital, is the closest town of all at about 20 minutes. It pairs well with a lake visit if you are already exploring the interior.
Arriving Without a Car
If you do not drive, you have three workable options. Take the bus or train to Virpazar and tour from there. Base in Podgorica and book a private transfer to Rijeka Crnojevica. Or use a taxi boat transfer once you reach the water. Captain Dusko can advise on the simplest plan for your starting point.
Plan your day on the water
The river-canyon route is the reason to aim for Rijeka Crnojevica. The 1.5-hour River and Lake Tour takes you through the reed channels and pelican habitat, while shorter and longer options sit alongside it on the tours page. Message Captain Dusko on WhatsApp to plan your arrival.
